Major General Robert L. Wolf
Commander, New York Naval Militia
Major General Robert L. Wolf was born in Ossining, New York on March 5, 1951. He graduated from Ithaca College and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in The United States Marine Corps in 1973. After attending The Basic School in 1974, he was assigned duties as a Rifle Platoon Commander and later as a Rifle Company Executive Officer with 3rd Battalion 2nd Marines. During this period, he took part in Operation Fluid Drive, the Noncombatant Evacuation Operation, Beirut, Lebanon. Following his FMF tour, he was assigned to Marine Barracks Bermuda, where he was promoted to Captain and served as the Executive Officer. During this tour, Captain Wolf was cited for his conduct during the Bermuda riots of 1977 and later for his unit's performance during an emergency evacuation of a commercial airliner.
From August 1980 to June 1981 Captain Wolf attended Amphibious Warfare School and received his Masters Degree in Business Administration from Nova University.
Reporting to 3rd Battalion 4th Marines, Camp Schwab, Okinawa, Japan, Captain Wolf served as Commanding Officer India Company. Captain Wolf was cited for heroism when his Rifle Company was taken under .50 caliber fire during routine range training at Camp Fuji, Japan.
Returning to the United States during June of 1982, Captain Wolf reported to the United States Naval Academy as an Instructor of Economics. Upon promotion to Major in 1984, Major Wolf was designated as Executive Assistant to the Director of International and United States Studies. He was also designated as the 6th Battalion Team Leader for the Marine Corps Accessions Program of the Academy. Major Wolf was twice selected as the Military Instructor of the year in Economics.
Major Wolf attended the 1986-1987 Marine Corps Command and Staff College at Quantico, Virginia, and was subsequently assigned to Headquarters, Marine Corps as a Section Head and later as Assistant Branch Head in the Manpower Division. Reporting to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, in June of 1990, Major Wolf was assigned as Officer-in-Charge, Special Missions Section, Special Operations Training Group. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, he was also assigned as the Assistant Operations Officer for the Commander-in-Chief Atlantic's In-Extremis Force. In December of 1990, Lieutenant Colonel Wolf was assigned as Operations Officer to 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable). He served during Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Provide Comfort and Provide Promise. In September 1992, he was the Mission Coordinator for the Tactical Recovery of the Italian aircraft G122 that had been shot down just west of Sarajevo, Bosnia (formerly Yugoslavia).
Lieutenant Colonel Wolf reported to Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, in November 1992. He was assigned as the Product Manager, Army Data Distribution Systems. This was a Joint Services position responsible for the acquisition and fielding of the Position Location Reporting Systems.
Lieutenant Colonel Wolf retired from Active Duty on December 1, 1994 at West Point, New York. On December 28, 1994, Lieutenant Colonel Wolf was commissioned into the New York Naval Militia and received a promotion to Colonel. He was assigned as Deputy Commander for Operations and participated in the Long Island Fire of 1995, the 1996 Winter Blizzard and corresponding flood disaster. He was Task Force Commander for the Department of Military and Naval Affairs (DMNA) Presidential Honor Guard aboard the Intrepid in June 1996. In July 1996, Colonel Wolf was placed on State Active Duty for the DMNA Task Force 800, the recovery of TWA Flight 800 that crashed off the Long Island shore.
On 2 July 1999 Colonel Wolf was promoted to Brigadier General at West Point, New York. In September 1999, he participated in Flood Relief in Ossining, New York during Tropical Storm Floyd.
During December 1999 through January 2000, Brigadier General Wolf was placed on active duty in Latham, New York as part of the Governor's Y2K Task Force.
On September 11, 2001, BGEN Wolf led the Naval Militia operations at the NYC OEM HQ. He received the Conspicuous Service Medal for his actions during the emergency and recovery effort.
From October 2001 to present, BGEN Wolf helped to develop and plan the New York State Emergency Boat Service, which protects and supports homeland defense missions in the New York State waterways, as directed by the New York State Adjutant General.
Brigadier General Wolf was promoted to Major General on February 4, 2008 at DMNA Headquarters, New York and will formally assume command of the New York Naval Militia on February 15, 2008.
Major General Wolf is currently the Director of Graduate Admissions at SUNY Maritime.
