Our troops look forward to receiving your letters and packages. That's why it's important to make sure your mail gets there, to the right person, in the right place.
The Department of Defense has issued the following guidelines for addressing your mail to military and civilian personnel deployed in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Use the service member's full name. The Department of Defense cancelled the Any Service Member program so you need to send to someone specific.
Include the unit and APO/FPO (Air/Army Post Office or Fleet Post Office) address with the nine-digit ZIP Code (if one is assigned).
Include a return address.
For packages, print on one side only with the recipient's address in the lower right portion.
Mail is flown from the point of the AE (East Coast) or AP (West Coast) addresses to locations in the Middle East. It is then moved to the troops' locations on a space available carrier.
Packages should be no more than shoe box size (10lbs or less). It must have a servicepersons name on it plus a customs declaration slip. This is for safety and security of the troops.

Packaging Tips:
Use plastic bags with zip-style closures for everything. They keep out sand, they keep out rain. Resourceful Marines are re-using them for all sorts of things. Quart size are great to keep their wallets and personal photos with them, in one of their many pockets, and they stay dry. If you're shipping a liquid (shampoo, eye drops), or items that are likely to melt or drip (Chapstick, deodorants, chocolate) be sure to pop it into a tightly sealed plastic bag first. That will help keep the rest of the items from getting gooey or ruined, just in case.
