Passing of Detachment Life Member John M. Ruggiero

John M. Ruggiero

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Detachment Life Member, John M. Ruggiero, a cherished husband, father, grandfather (Poppy), brother, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully in his home in Mount Vernon, NY, on March 22, 2026, at the age of 86. Born on October 3, 1939, in New York City, John was a man whose warm spirit and generous heart left an unforgettable mark on all who knew him.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Rose Ruggiero; his children, Maria Valvano, Michael (Eileen) Ruggiero, and Nicholas Ruggiero; his grandchildren, Rebecca and Leigha Pauly, Michael “Mikey” Ruggiero, Phillip Valvano, Dominic and Emma Ruggiero; his sisters, Francis Kollias and Rita Tellason. John was predeceased by his daughter, Antoinette Pauly. His legacy will continue through his family, as well as the many nieces, nephews, and friends who will remember him with love.

John proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps, an experience he held close to his heart throughout his life. He spoke often of his time in the military with deep pride and appreciation, cherishing the memories, camaraderie, and sense of purpose it brought him. He carried his love for the Marine Corps with him always, and it remained an important part of who he was.

Those who had the pleasure of knowing John were touched by his generosity, and sense of humor. He was always ready with a kind word or a joke to brighten someone’s day. Over the course of his life he had many interests and hobbies. Music was a constant interest; he took great joy in listening to and singing along with his favorite songs. He loved all things history and war related. Early in life, he was a man who loved to travel, seeking new adventures and experiences. In his later years, John discovered a love for painting, a pastime he dedicated many hours to. His love for simple pleasures, like fast food, were testaments to his appreciation of life’s small joys. He greatly enjoyed a strong cup of coffee and took delight in ending a meal with a double espresso and sambuca. Above all, John loved his wife Rose’s cooking and treasured the time spent with his family.

John’s presence was a gift to those around him, marked by his kind heart, generous spirit, and a sense of humor that could light up a room. His laughter and stories will be deeply missed but never forgotten. As we say goodbye, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man who was truly one of a kind. His memory will continue to inspire and warm the hearts of everyone he touched.
