Passing of Gene P. Wolf, father of Detachment Life Member Robert L. Wolf

It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Gene P. Wolf, father of Detachment Life Member Robert Wolf on 7 April 2020, he was 91.

Ossining, NY – Gene P. Wolf, 91 years old, died peacefully in his sleep at his home on April 7, 2020.

Gene is survived by Lillian Wolf, his wife of forty-two years, his former wife Joan Schneiderman Wolf of North Carolina, his immediate cousin Gerry Citron, son Robert, daughters: Karol and Randy, Step Daughters: Debbie, Judy and Linda, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Born and raised in Ossining, NY; the son of Robert and Esther Myers Wolf. Gene was a lifelong resident of Ossining. Gene was both curious and adventurous. When he was 8 years old he had a paper-route and collected both stamps and coins. Gene played varsity football at Ossining High School, fought in the Westchester County Boxing Championships, and, with his older cousin, Joel, road their bicycles from Ossining to West Point and back to watch Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis play Army Football. Three years in a row Army won the national football championship. Blanchard and Davis were known as “Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside” and both were awarded the prestigious Heisman Trophy. Gene caddied at the Sleepy Hollow Country Club and was sought after for his eagle eyes and uncanny ability to find golf balls.

Gene worked in the family furniture store on Main Street in Ossining and during the evenings he attended and graduated NYU Night-School receiving a BS in Financial Management. During the Korean War Gene volunteered and was part of the Civil Defense Force that stood watch at the Maryknoll Tower. He and his partner Jordan Lilian grew A. L. Myers furniture store and moved from Main Street to a 50,000 square foot building at 173 North Highland Ave, Ossining. The store became a Tri-State destination for fine furniture and accessories.

Gene was President of the Ossining Chamber of Commerce twice, President of Ossining Rotary Club, Vice President of the Congregations Sons of Israel, and on the Board of Directors for Phelps Memorial Hospital. Gene also perused and was an advocate for urban renewal in the 1960’s. Gene was very proud of his Ossining roots and took great pride in personally knowing the many generations of A. L. Myers customers and the many friends and acquaintances he would meet in town.

Gene was a member of Briar Hill Country Club and enjoyed golf with his family and friends. Gene lived a full life and his motto: “Keep Swinging” was instilled and cultivated amongst his family.

Gene Wolf’s Funeral services was held in a private service on April 8, 2020 at the Congregations of the Sons of Israel portion of Dale Cemetery in Ossining. Funeral Arrangements were handled by Dorsey Funeral Home, Inc. in Ossining
